Debbie,
When my son first became paralyzed and was in Children's Hospital, the
doctors first thought it was Guilliam-Barre, then a stroke, then an AVM based
on one of the many MRIs that he had. He had an arteriogram to try to locate
the AVM but after seven hours of exploration, an AVM was not found. There
were several options that the Neuroradiologist said could be done if an AVM
was found- a coil or some type of powder could have been injected to cut off
the AVM, which would eventually dissolve, but this was to have known to last
in adults for only about six months, a temporary fix. A new experimental
procedure using some type of glue which would be permanent was also an
option, however, depending on where the AVM was located and what type of
artery it was affecting was also a concern. Although it looked like an AVM
on the MRI, once the procedure was finished, nothing was found. My son was
transferred from Children's Hospital to a rehab hospital with an incomplete
diagnosis- still the possibility of a stroke although nothing had been found.
While at the rehab, the doctors there felt it looked more like TM.
