I had TM four years ago and have been self-catheterising ever since. I take
Ditropan (Oxybutinin) to help with bladder control, without which I can't
even walk down the street. Until last month when I ran out of the
medication, so I just stopped using it. I've been able to function to the
same extent as when I was on the medication. Does this mean that my bladder
function has improved? Will it go on improving? Who knows, but I just
thought my story might give some hope to fellow sufferers.
I've had on again, off again bladder retention/leaking. Usually the leaking
happens in conjunction with a UTI. I keep Ditropan on hand and take a few
tablets until I knock myself back into urinary retention (much more
comfortable than diapers!). As soon as the leaking stops I stop taking the
Ditropan and the retention continues. As with most TM things, I suspect this
is individual-specific. Still it's nice to be able to eliminate one of the
many drugs we're on!
Good Luck
Julienne
P.S. Some Doctor told me that the nerves which control the bladder are the
same ones that enable you to lift your big toe - so when you can move your big
toe, maybe your bladder control will be next. How's that for wacky?
