My name is Stephanie and I'm 26 years old and I have Transverse Myelitis.
It all started with a viral infection I had. The doctor gave me some
medication for it on Thursday. Monday I was throwing up all day. I went to the
doctor again on Tuesday morning for it and the fact that I was unable to
urinate and my legs were weak and jumpy. He chalked it up to being dehydrated
from throwing up and told me to drink gatorade and take Dramamine. By that
evening I was worse and bloated from not being able to urinate so my husband
took me to the emergency room. They catherized me and told me to go to my
doctor the next day. When I went to get up off the table my legs were like
noodles and I fell. They ran an IV of fluids through me and sent me home. Four
hours later I was back at the emergency room unable to unable to urinate
again. They did the same procedure except this time they admitted me. When my
doctor came in and examined me he knew what it was and sent me to another
hospital to see a neurologist. They did an MRI and spinal tap. They confirmed
it was TM. I stayed there for 9 days. During this time they ran IVs of
steroids through me along with all sorts of other medication for my viral
infection. I also received some Physical Therapy while I was there. I was then
moved to a Rehab center for another 9 days. There I was taught to stand on my
own again and eventually walk on my own again. I am home now recovering. I
still don't have full feeling in my legs and I have a Bladder infection. My
right leg has muscle spasms and so does my stomach. I still can't walk like I
used to and I can't drive or go to work. I would like to know if it gets
better and what are the chances of getting it again? And, will I be able to
get pregnant?
