I am a retired school principal and was stricken with TM in 1957. I have
three children. My wife and I felt that involving them in all aspects of my
illness helped them better understand that life is a challenge and everyone
experiences difficulties. My wife and I believe that, because of the
openness, each of the three children developed a better sense of caring for
others and learned not to pity persons afflicted with a serious physical
problem.
Professionally, I believe that you need to advise appropriate school district
personnel (Principal, Guidance Counselor, Nurse) about your condition but
always strive to keep your child's focus on his or her education and not your
physical limitations. Children are very capable of understanding that
someone in their family has a problem and is dealing with it. Children, in
some cases, may become burdened and stressed if they are always hear family
and friends talking about Moms or Dads illness.
