Donna,
I don't know what religion your mother is. Most people who profess to be
Christians would be willing and able to discuss current events, books,
grandchildren, etc. Christ did tell us to be "in the world but not of it",
but he never told us to retreat monkishly into religion. I'd encourage you
not to let your bad experiences in this regard keep you from the Bible. Read
it for yourself with an open mind.
