Somebody else asked about evoked responses. Here is what I found:
Somatosensory evoked potentials: A painless, diagnostic test that records
electrical changesin the brain in response to repeated electrical shocks
applied to a peripheral nerve.
- This test is useful in the diagnosis of MS because it can confirm the
presence of a suspected lesion which was not shown by a MRI scan, or
identify the existence of an unsuspected lesion that has not produced any
symptoms.

Their definition of TM is most interesting:
TM: Inflammation in the spinal cord interfering with nerve function below
the level of the inflammation.
- An acute attack of inflammatory delyelination that involves a section of
the spinal cord. Paralysis and numbness are experienced in the legs and
trunk below the level of the inflammation.

My wife's (second) attack at C-5,6 numbed her left arm and immobilized her
left hand. By this definition, her previous DX of TM was no longer valid.
And indeed, the neuro did change her DX to MS.
