Hello all:
Back in March, with the distribution of the TMA NewsLetter, Volume 2, =
Issue 2, I spotted an item in the article by Dr.. Lynn that concerned me =
for a couple of reasons. First, the information presented a misleading =
opinion, in my opinion, and I was concerned that the information would =
be relied upon and forwarded. Unfortunately this has occurred.=20
The information that concerned me was in Dr. Lynn's response to the =
question, "Should a person who has been diagnosed with TM who =
experiences recurring symptoms or an intensification of existing =
symptoms be tested for MS ?" Her response was lengthily and she did note =
that "In most follow-up studies of people who present with transverse =
myelitis, the majority DO NOT develop MS. However, she also notes, =
"recurrent idiopathic transverse myelitis has been reported (Tippett, =
1991)." Some may think that I am being nit picky but on one line she =
says that "...the majority DO NOT develop MS" and in a preceding line =
she says "recurrent idiopathic transverse myelitis has been reported." =
The point I'm trying to make is that the reported findings by Tippett =
1991 were based upon ONLY 3 INDIVIDUALS. A sample size of 3 CANNOT =
provide meaningful conclusions or allow for any significant statistical =
findings. In layman's terms, in my opinion, the only thing that should =
have been said about self reports by three individuals is NOTHING. I, =
for whatever reason, become concerned when a fellow TMer acquires =
information about the disease that is not totally and completely =
accurate. I fully realize that no one distributes inaccurate information =
purposefully but it does happen and I feel that I should speak up about =
it whenever I can be of even the slightest help.
Sorry friends but it was just one of those things that bothered me.
