Actually, on the earliest versions of win98, you WEREN'T y2k compatible.
You may have a later version in which it does not require the patch. For
win95, this problem was not fixed with the Real Time Clock, it will be fixed
if you download the patch. Also, if you have the most current version of
98, YES, it should be compatible. Yes, you can fix the date/time thing by
yourself without having to download the patch, but it also means that you
will have to remember to set yer clock forward or backward for the year
2000.
