Lori,

Sorry to hear about your disappointment with your disability insurance
situation. Unfortunately, insurance can be something like a parachute; you
usually don't know how it's going to work until you need to use it. It's
also a product that most people and employers select by price, assuming,
quite incorrectly, that all companies and policies are about the same. Would
anyone like to jump out of an airplane with a parachute made from unknown
materials selected only because it was made and packed by the lowest bidder?
Insurance policies are legal contracts covering many possible situations.
But who would consider checking with legal counsel before buying coverage?

That's one reason why all insurance sold in this country is subject to the
approval of the State Insurance Department. The terms and conditions
contained in the policy must comply with certain state requirements. More
importantly, there are unfair claims practices laws that regulate the
settlement of any claim.

Be aware that the first answer you get from the State Insurance Department
is not always the correct one. Like any state agency, not every one
answering questions can be assumed to be thoroughly knowledgeable on
everything.

Here's hoping that your situation will end up better!

Don
