I sent the following to a resident neurosurgeon who said he would =
try to answer some questions if we needed. He is a busy man and said he =
tries to check his email about 3 times a week. I do not want to bombard =
him, so if we have a real puzzler, let me know and I will send it to =
him.

Doc,
I need your opinion. Someone found this re: Pain From SCI.

PAIN FROM SPINAL CORD INJURY
=20
The Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting a research=20
project to evaluate experimental drugs as a treatment for=20
specific types of pain caused by spinal cord injury (SCI). =20
Individuals between the ages of 18 and 79 with SCI who have had=20
persistent pain for a minimum of 3 months following SCI may be=20
eligible.
For more information, please contact Victoria, Lairs, or Dr.=20

Gunny(who has TM) wrote this, "What's wrong with us in this =
picture?" after receiving the following response:
=20
Thank you for responding to my posting on the Internet about =
research we
are doing on medications for pain from spinal cord injury. However,
individuals whose pain is a result of transverse myelitis are not =
eligible
for the study.
=20
Again, thank you for your response, and I wish you the best of luck.

Gunny wrote this, "This may answer a few questions, especially the =
first sentence. You may want to print this and show it to your Doctors." =
after sending another question.
=20
Yes, TM can be caused by trauma, although it can also be present in =
the
absence of trauma. Thus, to keep the study group as homogeneous as
possible, we decided not to include those patients with TM. =
However, we
may have future studies for which you may qualify.
Please e-mail me your phone number, and I can contact you when we =
have more
details.

Sincerely,
Victoria Miller, Study Coordinator
=20
In your opinion, is TM a SCI in medical terms? I know that they have =
their definition and I know that they have already set their criteria, =
but we are curious.
=20
Thank you,
John

Dear John
It sounds like they are looking for people with sci due to external =
forces. Since those with tm may have other factors involved (ie =
viruses), they don't want to confuse the picture if the results are =
positive or negative.=20
