Dear Alton,
It has not been my experience that the general public is very
understanding of people with "falling problems". I have never fallen that
someone didn't help me up, but most often the look on their face is confusion,
and they really don't know what to say to me. I was quite heavy at one time
myself (272lbs), but even after having lost the weight(most of it anyway, I'm
180 now), people still look at me and see a 32yo, 5'3" blonde that looks
perfectly healthy, and don't have a clue how to react to what just happened. I
do my best to let THEM off the hook, there are also a number of people who
laugh, I've come to understand that when you "look" healthy, It can be very
hard for people to think that anything happened except " that goofy woman just
tripped over her own shadow". I like to change the look on their face when
they know that I'm o.k. by telling them, "it's a good thing I'm good looking,
because God certainly didn't make me graceful !" At that point, we usually
laugh, and I thank them politely. Laughter can make an awkward moment more
comfortable for all involved. Nothing I can do about the falling, but I've
learned that there is something I can do about the embarrasment for others and
myself. Besides, if I tried to explain, they'd probably regret picking me up !
I can obviously talk A LOT !
BE WELL<
Mandy

Re: falling
I have tripped over many cracks in the sidewalk many times. I have learned
to fall like a drunk or maybe it was inbred from when I was young.
I get up by getting on my knees and then tightened my legs. Then I am able
to "walk" backwards with my hands until my legs are upright.
