Hello,
This really may have nothing to do with TM, but I thought you may be the
best people to answer my questions. The 17 yr old son of friends of
mine was involved in a car accident 3 weeks ago. I guess it is pretty
amazing he survived. The surgery to repair his torn aorta resulted in
partial paralysis from the waist down. His prognosis seems to be pretty
good, although I don't think he can see it that way yet. They are
saying he will probably walk again...when and how well, they cannot say.
Anyway, my question is...I found out that he is here in this hospital.
I have been going to see him almost every day. I know initially his
parents and I hoped it would help him to talk to someone else who is in
a wheelchair. I am six years older than he, but he could still
identify. However, now I wonder if I should continue to visit. You
see, I am so sick right now and have been in the chair for 3 1/2
years...I do not want to scare him. Know what I mean? I don't know if
it is hurting or helping him for me to be involved. On the one hand, he
needs to adjust to the chair for now, but on the other it is important
he keeps his mind on his goals. He got very discouraged yesterday when
he went on an outing with his rehab group. Whereas before he was
wanting to go back to school, etc., now he doesn't want to. I am sure
he learned that the outside world is not like his spinal rehab center
where people understand about wheelchairs. Yes, people stare and drop
doors on you, etc. For some reason, the staring has never really
bothered me; this is the kind of thing I was hoping I could help him
deal with.
So, all of you wonderful, insightful people. Thank you for listening to
this long-winded question. What do you think? I do so want to help
him... Please let me know what you all think
Thanks!
