Karen, I'd go for the walker. I used one as soon as I
could--I had used the kitchen counters to hang onto
while I was still using the wheelchair but couldn't
get across the kitchen without a walker. I think that
it was very helpful. I had two, one with wheels and one
without (I inherited them when my father passed and
luckily had saved them for others to use). I was much
more comfortable with the one without wheels but my
dad and now my uncle preferred the one with wheels,
so I can't tell you which is better.
What neat kids to do such for their former teacher! I
remember how well my students kept secrets, too.
Keep up your push to walk. You'll make it with that
attitude.
Sincerely, JanH
