Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the name implies, the medications in this category are not steroids but
possess antiinflamatory actions as well as other properties. These drugs
inhibit the synthesis and actions of certain prostaglandins which are widely
distributed in body tissues and are integral to the inflammatory process,
platelet aggregation, and many more metabolic pathways. While there are
chemical differences between NSAIDS, they are clinically very similar. The
proper choice of agents is often determined by factors such as the condition
being treated, patient response, the dosing interval, and cost, to name a few.

Someone please explain EXACTLY, in lay terms what this means to me. Like what
does the word "prostaglandins" mean? What does platelet aggregation mean? I
just completed an in home 4 day 1000mg IV dose of Solumedrol and am now on a
Predisone taper 60mg 3x's day. Isn't Prednisone steroidal?

Need to be VERY informed tomorrow.
