CHERRY HILL, N.J., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Legal information regarding the
rights of a person with multiple sclerosis is now available in a free booklet
offered by the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA). Titled "MS
and the Law," the 32-page publication covers employment rights, Social
Security issues, and job discrimination, as affected by the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA). In addition, the booklet provides an extensive
question and answer section, referral information, and tips on securing legal
counsel. To receive a copy, call 1-800-LEARN-MS. The publication is
available on the Internet at the MSAA web site, www.msaa.com.
Known as the most common neurological disorder of young adults, multiple
sclerosis is a chronic and often disabling condition that afflicts as many as
500,000 Americans. According to MSAA, "MS and the Law" helps clarify common
legal issues that may arise after a diagnosis of MS.
"Our members have real concerns over their rights to keep working, receiving
health insurance, and enjoying equal access to public accommodations," said
MSAA Patient Services Director Susan Freund. "The booklet serves as a guide
for people to learn basic laws and regulations that protect both the disabled
community and the business community. We strongly advise our members to seek
qualified legal counsel for their specific situation."
In addition to "MS and the Law," MSAA provides its members with free
publications on medical issues, coping skills, and about agency programs and
services. Formed in 1970, MSAA has grown to a national nonprofit organization
providing direct patient care programs and services to assist individuals with
MS. Services include peer counseling, support groups, free loan of
therapeutic equipment, barrier-free housing, symptom management research and
therapies, no-cost MRIs, and other vital patient programs.
