Gunny gave me permission to forward this to the list.
This man beats his drum, but he is too modest to toot
his own horn. In my opinion, this note is one of the
most valuable recovery stories I have seen. It
illustrates the power of mind over matter.
Reading it made me remember how often, when something
I was doing would hurt, I would back off. Gunny would
grit his teeth and take it. That is a difference
between a man and a 64 year old boy.

Alton; When this first happened in July of 96, my wife walked out on me.
That was basically what motivated me, because I had to do everything for
myself now. I started by recalling what I was taught in the Martial Arts about
mind control. First I started telling my sub conscious that I could move. the
sub conscious mind never sleeps, and cannot distinguish between a lie and
truth. The more I told it I could move the more it believed it, and eventually
I started wigglin toes. A Podiatrist friend of mine suggested I try magnets in
my shoes. I did that, and I got some sensation back. I felt that if I could
feel the floor now, I could move. I started to do just that. It was rough at
first because the balance was gone. I called Dick Hartzell who developed a
thing called Jump Stretch, which is nothing more that big rubber bands, but
these, as opposed to free weights, give you resistance in the negative motion.
Soon I started regaining strength. Along with sensation and strength I began
to move more easily. The magnets also got rid of the pain in my feet, so now
moving pain free was a real pleasure. When I got into the heated pool at
Easter Seals, the warm water made me move easier. Whatever I could do in
water, I could do out of water, it was just a little more difficult. With a
lot of determination, along with the return of strength, I went from a wheel
chair to a walker to two canes to one in a nine month period, and I continue
to progress. That's it in a nutshell.
