Re: Baclofen pump

Barb,

I had flue-like symptoms that led to TM and complete loss of everything
below T-9. Ten weeks later the spasms and the pains began. This was in
1983. The spasms became quite violent over the years and my legs were
completely rigid when they wern't flying all over the place. High doses of
Liorasil (baclofen) gave some relief but also sent me to sleep. In 1991 I
had a baclofen pump installed (not a big deal). The effects were
immediate--complete relaxation of leg spasms. This was with a daily dose of
150 micrograms compared to 100,000 micrograms in pills. The pump holds 20
mls of concentrated baclofen (2000 micrograms/ml and the alarm is usually
set to go off when 18 mls are left. The alarm is a very low beep and I have
to listen very carefully to hear it. The pump is refilled under sterile
conditions and the flow rate set by an external computer. The whole
procedure takes about 20 min. After 5 years the battery in the pump ran out
and I had a new one installed (again no big deal). Having completly relaxed
legs makes life so much easier. I can shower without fear of a spasm
pushing me off my transfer bench and I can drive without worrying that a
spasm will not put a foot on the accelerator (this did happen once in the
pre-pump era).

I have to issue the TM'rs caution. I am only citing my own personal
experience. All of us have different major problems and for some TM'rs
spasms can be useful. Also, the baclofen did nothing to relieve the burning
pains that run from my lower back to the soles of my feet.

If you have further questions let me know. I am sure that with all of the
advice you will recieve from others who have tried the pump you will be
able to make an informed decision.

I would like to thank, Gunny(the fastest man on a keyboard), JanH, PatJ,
Molly and all who responded to my plea for help with itching eyes. The eyes
no longer itch but my chest and back, to the level where I have sensation,
itch like crazy, so much so, that I cannot stand to have clothes touching
my body. I am going to create quite a scene at tonight's basketball game
with Wisconsin.
