Hello - I was very interested in reading about other stories about numbness
and want to share my story in hopes that it may help others. About five years
ago I was in a car accident in which my C2 vertebrae was fractured and my
brain had two bruises. I was placed in a halo for 12 weeks. I was treated at
Craig Hospital in Denver as an in-patient for two weeks and an out-patient for
several more weeks. I am very thankful that my spinal cord was not damaged
and I am walking, talking, breathing and functioning as I was before the
accident. I was, however, left with some numbness in my left foot. The
doctors researched as best they could via brain and spinal MRI's and
electrical testing up and down my leg and through my spinal cord and could
find nothing and we wrote it off as some residual effect from the brain
injury. A year ago I had a baby girl and six months after she was born I
started experiencing increased numbness in my left foot, up both legs in my
arms and occasionally in my lips. It was very frightening. Being worse at
night when I was lying down, I was unable to sleep, panicking from all sorts
of horrible thoughts. I went back to the doctors that had treated me four
years earlier, having the brain and spinal MRI's and electrical testing done
again as well as seeing the head of the Rocky Mountain MS Center. Thankfully,
but frustratingly, they found nothing - yet, I was still numb, what was
this???? They offerred no help, so I tried my Physical Therapist, who did a
remarkable job of getting my neck moving again after a year and a half of
three times a week following the accident . She told me that she treats
patients with numbness and has had success. I met with her twice a week for
several months and although it helped with additional scar tissue build up
over the years, the numbness was still there. Again, what was this??? I met
with my Primary Care Physician who did some blood tests looking for possible
vitamin deficiencies and that showed nothing. Finally, at the recommendation
of a neighbor, I went to see a Chiropractor who specializes in Applied
Kinesiology. He found a vitamin B6 and B12 deficency and put me on some high
dosage of these vitamins which I have been taking since I started seeing him
in June. I am no longer taking the B12 and have backed way off on the B6,
just taking two Standard Process, Inc. B6 tablets a day. My numbness is gone
and I am one amazed person at how he finds the things he does and fixes them.
It has been six months since I started taking the vitamins, and the numbness
would come and go during that time, but it has been gone for a month now, and
hopefully for a long time. He did say that nerves heal very slowly, at about
1 millimeter a month, if it can heal. And, in my researching during this
ordeal, the B vitamins appear to be building blocks for our nervous system. I
also found that not all vitamins are created equally, he tried several
different brands of vitamins to determine the ones that worked for my system.
I know that the highly respected Neurologists don't condone my Chiropractors
methods or treatment, but after having an incredibly successful personal
experience with his treatments, I just want everyone to know that there are
some alternative methods out there that just might help you.
God's blessings to all of you - Susan.
