I was asked by a friend who is a nurse if I used Nutrasweet/aspertame. She
said it is known to cause neurological problems and even personality changes
in some individuals. She said it is an amino acid. Amino acids combine
together to make proteins, but the one in aspertame is not usually consumed
alone, or at least not very much. I don't know if that is factual; haven't
taken the time to research it. I stopped using it after that, "just in case"
-- figured I didn't need to take a chance on anything that might cause
neurological problems. One book I read when trying to find more info. about
neurological problems in general said aspertame was implicated in neurological
problems in some studies, but more studies would need to be done to be
conclusive. One thing I remember from my college nutrition class is that
multiple studies need to be done to be conclusive about anything involving
nutrition because there are so many variables when it comes to testing how the
human body reacts to anything (that's one reason we keep getting conflicting
reports about things like caffeine).
I know some people who have used it for years with no problems -- wonder if
some individuals are just more sensitive to it?
