For the past 17 years I have been self cathing. The first two years i
had several bladder infections, then a male nurse told me how to clean
cath with dial soap. Since than I buy clear plastic catherters by the
box full of a gross at a time. I reuse them washing with Dial soap after
each use and use about two weeks than changing for new. The hospital
will tell you to use sterile gloves and discard the catherter after each
use. Can youimagine the cost of that plan? Using Dial soap to wash your
hands before and after with the catherter will disinfect the hands and
catherter. This is what they call clean cath. So much for my 2cents.

Hi all. I signed on a while ago for my mother who was diagnosed 3.5 years
ago with TM and at the beginning of October had a relapse. She is making
much slower progress this time than last, and has been having some
additional, unrelated problems with her heart. However, the therapists
feel that she has reached a plateau in her progress and has surpassed the
goals initially set for her and are readying her to send her home. She
called and asked if I could forward a question to all of you regarding
cath. supplies and procedures. At the rehab center they are really pushing
her to use sterile supplies and wear gloves and the whole nine yards when
cathing. Before her relapse, she was self-cathing and reused her caths by
washing them every time she used them and sterilizing once a week. She had
no trouble with infection. She was wondering if there are some inexpensive
disposable caths available, or what others do.
Also, up until last week, she had no movement in her right leg at all. She
developed a bladder infection and was put on antibiotics and is now having
quite a bit of movement in her right leg - to the point that they had her
up on parallel bars yesterday. Anyone ever hear about antibiotics helping
like that.
Thanks for your help. I don't post often, but I do read everything and
pass a lot of info on to my mom, who is across the country from me. She
says that she has learned more second-hand from you folks then she has in
the past three years.
