Hello Wendy,
I am sorry to hear that your husband has TM, but you have come
to the right place for lots of advice etc. As Alton has said, go to
the archives and previous posting will tell you ever
so much. I was hospitalized with what was to be diagnosed as TM on
Friday 31 December 1993, left that hospital Friday 27 May 1994 in a wheelchair,
but having started to take a few (wonderful) steps using a walker and Canadian
crutches. Seven months of physio and gym work saw me on two walking
sticks (or canes) which I still use today. I actually pounded the
gym for two and a half years until I returned to a office job as an
administration officer in a Human Resources unit. I still exercise
daily, some times it is darn hard and on odd occasions I just have to have a day
off my feet just to let the body catch up. I am 55 years and 6
months old now and apart from TM in pretty good health although a little
overweight, however I am working on that also. Enough rambling about
me. Now for your husband, as Alton advised, go for it.
Recovery is possible, although may not be quite as good as before, but every
little achievement becomes a little personal celebration. I have
found that I have had (and still do) set goals, try to be and keep very
positive about getting better at what can be done (I do not entertain the
thought about what I can not do - most things are possible), keep very focused
on what you want to achieve and never - but - never lose sight of the or your
big picture on your life goals. TM is not a sentence, but a damn
nuisance of an inconvenience, Like Alton, I don't regard myself as
disabled, but able to do most things and I try to the best of my
ability. I intend to live a life as full as I can, and my wife and
family and friends do help some along the way.
Wendy, lets know how it goes, all the best for you and your
husband in the future and I hope that 1999 brings your hopes and dreams to
life.
Regards from Errol, Narangba, Queensland Australia, ( on a
very wet summery New Years Day).
My name is Wendy and my husband has TM. He
had meningitis and 6 months after being in hospital is home.
He is a T10 paraplegic and is sleeping all
the time. He has no motivation to do anything. All he wants to do is drink
tea and sleep.
Any hints on motivation????
