Costas,
I was 20 yeards old at the time. Somwhere near the end of October 1971 I
had a flu shot. About mid November, I contracted mononucleosis.either
the flu shot had an impact on my immune system and lowerd my response to
fighting mononucleosis,I do no know.Or maybe it was the opposite and the
mono lowered my immune system and the flu shot took over, no one knows.
I first was told that I had Guillain-Barre syndrome, but I do not think
that the doctor ever said that. I believe that it was from the nurses
who related my symptoms to another patient who had been hospitalized
about 6 months before.
It is hard to say which way, because around 1976 when people where
getting the Swine Flu Vaccine, there were many cases of Guillain-Barre
Syndrome which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus which is also a cause
of mononucleosis.
I did not get the TM diagnosis until April 1978 when I saw the Chief of
Neurology at Massachussetts General Hospital(associated with Harvard).I
had many tests run and I believe the diagnosis was due to the residual
effects, whereas Guilain-Barre Syndrome(GBS affects the peripheral
nervous system and the residual effects are not as severe.
I met the peron who had been previously hospitalized in the same hospial
and the only residual he had was a numb spot on his cheek about the ize
of a quarter.
I also met a lady years later whom also had GBS, but she had no residual
after effects.
In my case, who was the chicken and who was the egg and which one caused
the trouble.
