Carolyn,

In response to your note yesterday, I also have a lesion at C2-3 and my
main experiences have included weakness, tingling and numbness of my
right side (mainly hand, arm and upper trunk area) as well as fatigue.
But, I also get that same sensation down my spine, especially in the
mornings and evenings, when bending my head down. I often wonder if is
LHermeitte's sign (spelling?) as well. I was diagnosed with TM in Sept
96, and my symptoms have improved greatly since then. Hang in there!!

My next response is for the whole group:

Sorry, I haven't written since first joining this list in Sept but I
started a new job right about the time I was having my first symptoms,
not to mention that my husband and I had just moved to Austin, TX from
Baton Rouge, LA in June and don't know many people in this area. You
can say that these first eight months here in Austin have been rather
stressful. But, since my first symptoms were fairly mild and have been
improving, I have been able to grow within my company by getting a
promotion and having my life return, somewhat, to normal. I still have
numbness, weakness, and tingling in my right arm and hand and of course
get very fatigued if I push myself. But, since the weather has been
cool and dry here in Austin, I feel that has helped as well. The summer
was so hot, and of course my first symptoms appeared right after my
graduation from college, moving to a new city, getting a new job and
after my husband and I spent a day at a water park in 101 degree
weather. I really believe the heat is hell on TM persons. Like I said
my first symptoms appeared after getting sunburned at the water park.

I do have a question for the group. I read all of your message on a
daily basis but since I don't have a computer at home, I only get access
to e-mail at work and can't spend as much time responding as I would
like to. From what I have been reading, I am curious about the MS and
TM connection. My neuro first thought I had MS or cancer, then when
only one lesion was located and my spinal fluid came back clear, TM
became the diagnosis but he recommended I read up on MS. What does that
mean? Anyway, I am in the process of finding another neuro but since I
am unfamiliar with Austin don't know of a good one. If anyone has any
info about Austin neurologists let me know. Mine seems to think Vicodin
is the only thing I need!! Of course, I can't function at work if I
take it every four hours like he suggested so I only take it
occasionally at night when my back and neck are really bothering me.
Back to my main question about MS, I have been able to return to almost
normal functioning within about four months of my first symptoms, I was
never hospitalized. So, being a 26 year old female, I was wondering if
my scenario falls more into a MS sort of picture. I have been reading a
lot on TM and MS and it does seem that most of you, as well as what I
have read, have not had much progress in recovery (or very slow
progress) whereas people with MS usually have remission periods where
they return almost, if not 100% back to their normal functioning level.
So, if any of you have any clue as to what I should expect from this,
please feel free to write. I am baffled! I do know that we must all
try to lead positive, less stressful and tiring lives. God bless all of
you and there is hope out there, maybe one day they will understand all
of this.

Hi,
I'm curious. Is this jolt at the back of the head Lhermett's Sign, an
electric sensation that goes sometimes down the spine and into the
extremities and genitals? My doctor says this can happen when the spinal cord
is affected from TM, MS, or disk problems etc. in about 3% of patients. It's
an uncomfortable feeling and often makes me feel dizzy and nauseous. I have a
neurologist who seems to believe that TM is a component of MS, but instead of
multiple leisions there is usually one leision that transverses the spine. I
get totally bewildered and overwhelmed trying to figure it out. I also have
two slightly herniated disks at C4-5 and C5-6 as well as the leision at C2-3.
My hand and feet are still numb, but functioning. I still lose my balance and
get lots of prickly feelings, and am fatigued all the time. Its been one year
since it all began. The key is to always keep faithful and smiling!!!
God is with us!!
Carolyn
