On the 12th September 1996 I was diagnosed with Acute Transverse Myelitis
at the C 5 and T 8 levels . Prior to it's onset I was admitted to hospital
with Broncho - Pnuemonia. My initial symptoms were similar to those
associated with a
flu, high temperature, severe head and backache On admission it was also
found that I was diabetic and that I was suffering from a condition called
Myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart muscle. In the days
immediately prior to the paralysis I also experienced muscle weakness and
loss of bladder function.

When the paralysis set in I was transfered to another hospital and was in
ICU with paralysis from the chest down. I was treated with corticosteroids
but these did not help.My MRI showed a swelling highup in the cervical
region of the cord. I spent four months in hospital and whilst there
developed bedsores which complicated issues and hindered my rehabilitation.

My codition at present is that I have not recovered any sensation or
movement in both my legs, have suffered severe muscle wastage. In addition
I also have severe contractures and spastisity of the lower limbs. My left
hand is now non-functional but I have recovered about 50% use of my right
hand. My physician and neurologist have told me that my paralysis is
permanent.

I have tried several forms of treatment, from accupunture to reflexology
however, none was of any benefit to me. I think it is important to maintain
a
balanced diet, a disciplined routine of physiotherapy and a positive
attitude.
