"My name is Shirley Foley, from the Central Coast of New South Wales in
Australia. I am a new subscriber to this forum. My brief history with
T.M. is as follows.
In October, 1996 I was not feeling well, suffering with terible back pain.
Eventually I had an M.R.I.(T3-T11). I was diagnosed as having Tranverse
Myelitis. I spent 9 days in hospital, and after 6 months of physiotherapy
I was almost back to normal.
In March, 1997 I had a second attack. I was completely paralysed from the
waist down. This time I spent 28 days in hospital, before going to a rehab
unit of another hospital for the next 5 months. Released from rehab, I
came home taking the following medication: BACLOFEN, DANTRIUM, VALIUM,
ENDEP, ZOCOR, MINIPRESS, COLXYL 120, COLOXYL with SENNA, PANAMAX and
SORBILAX.
To improve my bladder function my doctor prescribed PROBANTHINE. After 12
days I began to lose the sight in one eye. I stopped taking probanthine
and the sight gradually returned, taking a month to become normal again. A
week later the sight in the same eye went again. I was told that this was
called OPTIC NEURITIS. This was 9 months ago, and there has been no
subsequent improvement.
In September, 1998 my doctor started me on PROBANTHINE again, assuring me
that it had nothing to do with my eye problems. I once again took it for
12 days, and I began having hot sweats and great pain in my back, followed
by weakness in my legs. L ast week i was readmitted to Gosford Hospital,
and was subsequently diagnosed as having Multiple Sclerosis.
My question is this. Has anybody had similar reactions with probanthine,
or any of the other drugs mentioned?
Thanks,
Shirley."
