Curly toes

My number two toes (the ones next to the big toes) curl down so that the
ends of the toes face the floor. When I walk it hurts. My podiatrist says
I need to have the tendon on the bottom of the toes cut to allow the toes
to go straight again?

I hesitate to do this. Do any of you have/had the same problem with a
better solution?
I thought that a device that would fit under the toe and then tape the toe
straight to it would work, but I have not been able to find anything like
that.

Help.
