HI Kris,
I read your letter with a feeling of lonelines because for many
years I wished for someone who knew what I was going throough. I am in
my 18th yr and they have been filled with confusion , pain and
frustration. I walk with cane or crutches and vry little without
support. It feels like I am going fall, which I do all to frequently. I
have a very difficult time getting up.
You had to have a lot of frustration through the years as a
teenager and young adult. Do you have pain and if so have you found any
relief for it? Do you walk allright or have needed support thru the
yrs.? I have not been on the list long , but I want to welcome you to a
fine group of people.

Hello Everyone,
I was diagnosed just the day after Memorial Day (but in 1959). I remember
that weekend being very hectic; I had gone hiking with some friends, I was
practicing for the June Show a dance recital and I swam most of Memorial Day.
I remember feeling tired and kinda like I was drunk. When I walked I felt
like I was weaving back and forth. Later that afternoon, after I woke up from
a nap, I climbed out of bed and fell to the floor. I had NO control of my
legs! From the time I was swimming to the time I woke up, was about 3 hours.
I was rushed to my pediatrician, who diagnosed it as "temporary paralysis".
I still had control of both my bladder and bowel, they left me on the
examining table (with that thin piece if tissue underneath me) I
remember..... I kept telling them I had to go and they told me to
wait.......well I could no longer wait, cause I lost the control to hold it
......I pee'd all over the table. I remember feeling so embarrassed. They
sent me home and the next morning I was worse. I was totally numb, paralyzed,
with no control of anything from my waist down. I was rushed to the hospital,
on this day (even tho I was only 9) I was humiliated. I layed naked, in that
emergency room for 6 hours. (seemed like an eternity) Every doctor that was
in a 20 mile radius, came in to look at me. Finally, I was tired of it and I
remember telling one doctor............"NO, he could not look under my little
cover, that I had had enough". My Mom came in and comforted me. I was then
admitted to the hospital, where I spent the next 6 weeks in isolation.
I just know that every Memorial weekend, I think...."another year has gone
by".
My many thanks to everyone here, that read and respond. It is so nice to know
I am not alone anymore.
Sincerely,
Kris~
p.s. I saw a man this weekend walking with a cane, very stiff legged. Due to
this list........I no longer thought polio, sports injury or accident........I
thought.....humm......wonder if he is a TM survivor?
