I just had to get hand controls installed on my car in May due to TM
related loss of light touch sensation in my feet. In Florida I have to
have a bit more of the alphabet on my license than most. I have to have
automatic transmission, hand controls, and spinner knob as license
restrictions. I'm also blind as a bat so I have contacts/glasses
restriction but that was way before TM. I don't think it would be very
safe to continue using a foot that causes pain when applying pressure on
the gas, or especially the brakes. My rehabilitation specialist told me
I could probably never drive a standard transmission car again - which
works out great since I don't have one anymore. I have a Saturn (my 3rd
one) which I highly recommend to anyone with a disability who is
considering purchasing a car. They have a mobility program which
reimbursed me for the entire cost of having the hand controls, etc. put
in my car ($780.00).
Hope this info helps Sayward (and anyone else).
Lori who is mobile again and loving it!!!
(in Florida).
