Dear Pat,
It has taken me a few days to respond to your post, because it took me
back very vividly and painfully to 13 years ago when I walked in your
shoes (or rolled in your chair). Your story is so much like my
experience, I could have signed my name. I too am a T5 paraplegic and
remember all to well the bed cathing and dressing because of trunk
instability, but little by little the body began to compensate and I can
now sit up and even stand and walk with a walker short distances and
actually have fairly good balance. I know you can't at this point
comprehend it getting better - but it will!
I wince when I hear someone use the term "wheelchair bound" - I am not,
nor have I ever been "bound" by my chair - "mobility challenged" - yes -
but never "bound."
Pat, you and I may never, on this earth, be "unparalyzed," but that does
not mean our quality of life has to be - I PROMISE - IT WILL GET
BETTER, as your body adjusts and you learn the "tricks of the TM
trade." I have a favorite song I sometimes sing in church called "The
Master's Hand." It reminds us that we should try to "hold on," but when
we are too weak or weary to hold on anymore - HE STILL HOLDS ON TO US!!!
- The darkest storm means dawn is just in sight!! IT WILL GET BETTER!!!

Consider yourself hugged -
