Hello!

BRIEF HISTORY

My name is Lynda. I have Lupus and have had several atm attacks in the last 10 years
but never to the point of paralysis, umtil now. In September of '97, I couldn't bear
weight on my left leg, a couple of days later I was paralyzed. Both my doctors were out
of town and the whole hospital admittance and care was a comedy of errors. In short, I
did not receive pulse steroids until 2 days after being admitted, and it was not
effective. I started IV chemo at the same time and was told it takes 2-3 months to
work. In November I started getting movement recovery.

Today I have movement recovery, my right side weaker than my left. I have bowel
return, but can't completely empty my bladder. I have sensation and am still
hypersensitive to hot and cold water and pain.

I am walking in the parallel bars and made it into a walker. Then I got sick and it set
me back a couple of months. I am walking in the bars better than I ever have but will
wait until I am proficient in the bars before using a walker. I am going to get some
ankle/foot orthotics which will help with stability. My problems are proprioception, my
gait is exagerated, and my pelvis/trunk area is weak. I can't stand yet but can balance
for longer periods of time than before. I am told I will walk, but who knows at this
point, how well.

The first 3 months of my injury, the only thing that kept me going was reading the tmic
list. I went through almost every page. Now that I am improving, I have derived some
questions from my research for those having recovery, and am thanking everyone in
advance for their responses. I read all the stories some time ago so if you could
include a brief summary of the severity of your attack and your recovery progress, that
would put things in perspective and would be very helpful!! Thanks.

RE: FATIGUE

In relation to walking, what do you consider a long distance and a short distance?

What activities can you still do, and can no longer do?

Can you drive... a standard?

Can you travel?

How has your job performance suffered?

Do you use a wheelchair or other walking aids? For what percentage of time?

Overall, how has fatigue affected your quality of life?

RECOVERY

If proprioception was a problem, did it improve?

If your gait was poor, did it improve?

Did exercise of any kind help your gait or your proprioception?

Did you have bowel and bladder recovery. What was the problem before and how long did
oit take to return?

Are you still seeing recovery?

That's it! Thanks everyone!

Lynda
