PEMOLINE ('CYLERT')
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--
Pemoline ('Cylert') is a stimulant that is usually prescribed to treat
hyperactive children (in whom it has a calming effect). It is used in MS
patients to treat fatigue, and has been shown to be successful for this in a
majority of patients studied in controlled clinical trials. The NMSS is
funding a controlled multicenter trial of pemoline and amantadine, another
anti-fatigue agent, against placebo.
Pemoline is generally well tolerated, with the major side effects being
insomnia or restlessness. A few patients have reported palpitations. There may
be a potential for habituation. Patients should discuss the risks and benefits
of pemoline with their physician.
