Jennifer and All,

I don't know what your sore is like, but this is what worked for
Bill. He had experimented with various dressings
and various nurse's methods from about 1985-1993. Nothing seemed to
work. He had a sore on his ankle oh about the size of a quarter--just
couldn't get rid of it!!!!

Your sore might be different, but for his, the silver sulfadiazine
seemed to only make it worse or did nothing to make it better.

Allevyn - these are the patches we got at the drug store for $7.50
a patch - Sherry, at our local drug store told us
she had been working with selling stockings, braces, and such for 20
years, .....she told us these dressings are the best thing out
there---she told us not to use any type of salve or gel. That might not
work for you, but that is what worked for us - we just put the patches
(4x4) under the TED socks right over the sore at the ankle - at the
location of Bill's sore - the patch would stay there without tape and it
healed up in oh, about 2 months I would say. Before that, the sore had
stayed open for about 8 yrs. Once in a while we cheated a bit with a dab
of lotion or silvadene. He only wore these during the day--nothing at
night. We bought new ones every few days.

Carrasyn Gel - Carrington Laboratories , Irving Tx 75038 - Olsten
Temporaries ordered some products for us
from them - it was a gel. First we had to spray with their brand-name
cleanser and then use sterile gloves to put a gauze on there every 12
hours. We used tape for these - seemed to draw the infection out but the
sore did not completely close till we used the Ferris PolyMem dressings.

This was another sore (not the one on the ankle that stayed open for
8 yrs)....but after using that carrasyn gel
it got about half size (size of a dime)....the nurse from Olsten ordered
some pink pads similar to the Allevyn. With these, we followed the
directions on the pack but they are pink dressings and we taped those
on---left them on all night and only changed them every few
days....finally that sore closed up completely.

Boy! I can sympathyze with you on this. We read every brochure we
could. With the big sore, we didn't even get anywhere till Sherry at the
drug store here told us to quit soaking the feet all the time and just
use the Allevyn. Like I said, it closed gradually and took several
months. It broke open another time but didn't take us as long to close
it back up. We found Doctors tried to get us to use the tight tight
stockings and for us, this did not help either.

Best wishes and I hope this helps someone. But we are all different
- he might have even taken some antibiotics during some of these times
which might have been a factor, too, and I suppose the position on the
ankle or foot
makes a difference in terms of rubbing.....

Best wishes regardless of which method you finally decide to use. I will
cheer and holler with you the day the sore
finally closes up for good!
