Just received notice of the following. Thought some of you would like to
know.
From: National Association of Protection & Advocacy Systems
Legislative Alert: March 23, 1998
"Congressman Bud Shuster (R.-Pa.) is planning to offer an amendment during the
mark up of House Bill 2400 "Building Efficient Surface Transportation and
Equity Act" (BESTEA) before the full House Committee on Transportation and
Infrastructure. This amendment would exempt Greyhound Bus Lines and other
regional carriers from complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act's
accessibility statutes, and pre-empt any rules and regulations from the
Department of Transportation.
This is Greyhound's response to the Dept. of Transportation's release of
proposed rules/regulations (March 20, 1998) forcing the nationwide bus carrier
to make all their buses accessible by the year 2012."
Call your congressman/woman and let them know how you feel. Rep. Bud
Shuster's office no. is 202-225-2431 and his fax no. is 202-225-2486.
A wheelchair lift in all buses by 2012 and new buses received by 1999 would
only increase the average ticket 35 cents according to the Dept. of
Transportation. Of course, Greyhound is saying it will cost much more.
So what's the problem Congress??????????? We start to exempt one business
from ADA requirements then who else is going to want to be exempt?
JUST MY OPINION.
Penny
