It is my understanding that the virus, bacteria or whatever that gets into
the spinal cord creates a protein that is similar to the protein that makes up
the myelin sheath around our nerves for insulation/nerve conduction. Our own
immune system reads that this foreign virus protein is there and creates white
blood cells to specifically attack the virus protein, but they are blind(so-
to-speak) and get confused and also attack the myelin protein that has a
closely similar protein type.
