When my little boy had TM they tested his stool for polio - seems an
unvaccinated Amish kid had similar symptoms and they were worried about an
outbreak or something. They can test specifically for the polio virus, so a
doctor can find out for sure if he or she runs the right test. As far as I
know the difference is:

polio - a specific virus that does specific damage
TM - your body's immune system over-reaction to something where it attacks
your myelin sheath holding your spinal cord.
