STEVE
I have self cathed since my onset of T/M. The only problem with not emptying
your bladder at least a few times a day, is the residual urin left in the
bladder can sour and create other problems. Also, my Dr says not to let the
bladder accumulate no more than 500/600 cc 's of urin at a time. It stretches
the bladder and can cause folds to be made in it that retains urin that stays
and can sour and cause infections. When I am out on an excursion or
traveling, I use an indwelling foley for the day with a bag to avoid frequent
trips to bathrooms that may or may not be so clean. I also use a foam named
ALLCARE by Calgon to cleans my hands before cathing. It is a sterializing
foam, and helps cut down on infections from self-cathing. Careful using it on
sensitive areas, it has alcohol in it. I am not sure of the efficacy of
routine antiobotice being taken--will you not build up a tolerance to it and
then it will loose its effectiveness? When I do get infections, which I feel
is enivetable, my Dr alternates between different and new antiobotics out on
the market to help keep the different germs and bacteria from building up a
tolerance to it and it loosing its effectiveness.

What are some experience others have in this area? I feel his is a very
important subject.
