Integra LifeSciences Announces New RGD Patent
PLAINSBORO, N.J. and SAN DIEGO, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Integra LifeSciences
Corporation (Nasdaq: IART) today announced that a new patent based on the
Peptide sequence arginine- glycine- aspartic acid (RGD) was recently issued to
The Burnham Institute, and is exclusively licensed to Integra through its San
Diego subsidiary Telios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This patent, U.S. patent
#5,695,997, covers methods of altering integrin-mediated cell attachment
activity through the use of the core RGD amino acid sequence.
The newly issued patent is a direct result of the pioneering work begun in the
early 1980s by co-inventors Michael D. Peirschbacher, Ph.D., Integra's Senior
Vice President and General Manager of Telios, and Erkki Ruoslahti, MD,
President and CEO of The Burnham Institute. The RGD patented technology has
been shown to have potential utility in a number of important and rapidly
growing medical therapies, including the areas of tissue regeneration,
biocompatible coatings for implantable medical devices, thrombosis (blood
clotting), cancer treatment, immune system regulation, inflammation, and
control of angiogenesis.
Integra LifeSciences acquired Telios Pharmaceuticals in 1995 to commercialize
Telios technologies relating to extracellular matrices and integrin-mediated
activity and in particular their applications to tissue regeneration. Integra
is using Telios' findings and methodologies to enhance and accelerate
development and commercialization of its medical products in the areas of
artificial skin, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Integra holds more than 200
issued patents relating to its proprietary technologies.
"The discovery of the family of integrin cell surface adhesion receptors has
opened a vast new opportunity for therapeutic intervention," Dr. Pierschbacher
said. "This work represents significant efforts to understand the function of
these receptors, and enhances our ability to develop successful drugs to speed
wound healing." Dr. Pierschbacher discussed the application of this
methodology in the manipulation of integrins toward therapeutic outcomes at a
national conference on integrins held January 30 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Dr. Ruoslahti was the conference's opening plenary speaker.
Integra LifeSciences Corporation is the developer of the Integra(TM)
Artificial Skin. Integra(TM) Artificial Skin is the first of a series of
products that the Company is developing to regenerate a variety of body
tissues which do not do so spontaneously, including dural membrane, articular
cartilage and peripheral nerves. Integra manufactures proprietary actives and
absorbable materials-based therapeutic applications and pharmacological
products. These are designed to control the behavior of cells within the
patient's body and to regenerate tissue that has been irreversibly lost to
disease, accident, surgery, or age-associated disorders.
