I am a care provider for a 59 yo person with TM. He lives in a small
town and I had to move in with him as his 24/7 care provider. The
problem is he seems to be very depressed over his condition. He is in
a motorized wheelchair and seems to have a low pain threshold. He takes
lots of pain killers, antidepressants, sleeping pills ect.. None of this
needless to say helps in rehabiltation. His does stand up exercises
several times a day but its his emotional state that is the biggest
problem. This guy is treated too easy by most of the people around here.
Althought they mean well I think he has turned over his life and his
rehabiltation to others. This is not good. If something hurts a little
bit he wines like a child. Now I realize I can't feel his pain but
I feel sure he is not hurting as much as he complains about it. It's
like
the old saying "are you going to be a cripple or a guy in a wheelchair"
(or one leg ect...) is really appropiate here. Any sugesstions on how to
motovate this guy would be greatly appreciated. Send e-mails to Dale
(that his name not mine) without discussing this letter. He doesn't know
I am writing it. Anyone who has gone though any similar experences in
their
illness and can relate to Dale would be especially helpful. He has had
TM for three years and I feel sure he could improve if his state of mind
was better. Thanks and best wishes to all in your rehabiltation.
