Dear Bill,

I live in Oklahoma City and work in New York City therefor before TM hit me I
took on life at a pace of Mach ll, with my hair on fire. No one can prepare
you for the
this nightmare of TM. I have gone from not walking- walking with much
assistance-
walking with a cane-(often falling and brealing my fall with my face or rib
cage, oh what fun). I currently walk with out a cane and actually appear
realitively normal mainly because I have a strong willed doctor who put me in
PT with in a week of dignos.
There is very little they expects can tell you about TM, I had Neruo's in both
OKC and NY. I as you faced about the same thing your mother faced re:
doctors, until and thank God my doctor with in 36 hours told the neuro's what
she was going to do , treat me for a thing called TM, not MS or cancer. The
fear of the unknown scared all of 'nigh unto death', basicly because they look
at you over their white coats specticals and can say very little to comfort
you. Finally the a couple of the politicians am consultant to got ahold of
the doctors in NYU Medical Center, they confirmed my doctors diagnosis, thus
jointly setting up a plan of action.
PT not only help me learn how to walk again it also helped me to see others
who where in the same condition (not TM but devistated) giving me a sounding
board.
Swimming is a great equalizer for us and the water is very forgiving when you
fall.
PT would start me out just floating to relax, along with another patient
partically parralized from the sternum down.
Pt also had machines to assist in keeping my body in basic shape with out much
from me at first. Later I would move on to much harder things and I will tell
you right darn now, I swore and spit after the words PT for about 4 weeks, but
it worked.
I had to learn how to manage the pain every step of this journey and I had to
keep a steady pace of PT. This group has been a life saver, even when I could
not return respounses or read it for serveral days. If you have a ? just ask,
we will help.
Lastly, you will not see the effects of PT at first but give them some time I
went from calling them 'Nazi's' to being eternally grateful for them. (sorry
this is so very jumbled, I am trying to return about 34 e-mails)
Kindest and warmest regards,
Beth Rowton
