Barbara,
To begin with, it is not a dumb question. No question is ever dumb. Asking
a question is a great learning tool.
I agree with Bob about the "floaters" in the urine. If you look have it in
a clear container and cannot see through it, there is a good chance that it
is a UTI. Another indication that I have found is the smell. If you detect
a strong odor, there is the possibility that it ids a UTI. Another
indication may be constipation. As one urologist I had would say, "bladder
and bowel, bowel and bladder". There is always the chance that these signs
may not show a UTI, but I feel that the odds are strong that there is one.
One of the reasons that some people get frequent UTI's, is because of the
residual in the bladder. I have about a 300cc residual. I do urinate, but I
usually do a self-cath once a day to drain the residual to keep the
bacteria from growing.
