Obstetric Issues and the Neuroimmunologic Disorders: Brochure Available on TMA Web Site
Donna Chattin
Women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy can access information via The Transverse Myelitis Association website regarding obstetrical issues faced by women with TM, ADEM, and NMO. Transverse Myelitis, Acute Disseminated Encepahlomyelitis, and Neuromyelitis Optica are not contradictions to becoming pregnant. There are definitely risks involved, but these can be managed. Careful evaluation by your obstetrician and your neurologist can help identify potential challenges and how best to deal with them.
The information is available in the form of a brochure, which can be accessed and printed from your home computer in pdf format.
The brochure addresses many important issues, including:
- Conception issues, including fertility concerns and risk of miscarriage.
- Concerns regarding genetic links to TM, ADEM and NMO.
- Preconception counseling and selection of the proper health care provider, i.e., perinatologist vs. general obstetrician vs. certified nurse midwife.
- Medication use prior to conception, during pregnancy, and postpartum.
- Potential complications during pregnancy, such as mobility problems, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), urinary tract infections, constipation, anemia (low blood count), and preterm labor. Details on how these complications may be managed.
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy and their impact on TM, ADEM, and NMO.
- An explanation of Autonomic Dysreflexia, a potentially life threatening complication which can occur during labor. The known triggers of Autonomic Dysreflexia and how it can be prevented and treated.
- Pregnancy Induced Hypertension vs. Autonomic Dysreflexia. Why it is critical to know the difference.
- The labor and delivery process for women with TM, ADEM, and NMO.
- The safety of epidural and spinal anesthesia for women with TM, ADEM, and NMO.
- Choosing which type of medical facility will provide the best care for women with TM, ADEM, and NMO during labor and delivery.
- Postpartum issues, such as bladder distention and constipation.
